Homeschool Is Cool...

Tags:

With a kid in private school (and another on her way) I'm not exactly the go-to guy when it comes to homeschooling.  It's not that I'm not for it. I love the idea, the concept; I don't know much about it because with both me and my wife working > 60 hours/week (each) we just can't do it ourselves...  And, as with most things about which I know too little, I've allowed the stereotypes to color my impression of what homeschooling (and its practitioners) is (are) all about. Kudos to "The Pioneer Woman" (see http://thepioneerwoman.com/homeschooling) for helping to set the record straight whilst given a guided-tour of homeschooling at her own homestead. The truth is that homeschool families are almost as diverse as the rest of the country. While more than a few do live by a relatively more traditional code of behavior than the house next door, a good many partake in the very same vices: they drink alcohol; they watch racy TV shows; they let their kids play video games and eat processed food, etc. Where they differ from the house next door, however, is in their choices of where education should be performed and who is best suited to actually do it. Here are questions that come immediately into my mind vis-a-vis homeschooling (I'm sure you can think of many more):* Does the home provide a sufficiently controlled environment, one conducive to learning? * Does the program provide enough opportunity to interaction with others?* Are the parents who teach their children given adequate teaching instruction?* Do homeschool parents have access to high-quality texts, programs, and resources?* Does having one teacher/one small class provide a student with a varied enough experience? To answer any of these questions is tantamount to opening Pandora's Box so I WON'T DO IT! I'm not just being a chicken; I honestly think that the answers to each question vary by home. What matters most, according to Teach for America's Wendy Kopp are "past demonstrated achievement" and "perseverance."  So to the extent that the parent-as-teacher has done good things in his/her past and can motivate, their kids stand to benefit - enormously.Over the next few months, I shall learn more about the world of homeschooling and will share whatever I can to supplement those parents whose kids, like mine, are still taking buses and/or cars to school.Â
